NFL Owners to meet in Chicago today to discuss league matters

By Umaru Lamin, DGT Sports Writer

The NFL Owners are set to meet today in Chicago today to discuss the present labor issues affecting the league. The meetings are set as a forum for the Owners to discuss the key issues that will go a long way for the league and players agreeing on a labor contract. With the outlook of the national economy not improving over the coming years Owners want the insurance that the new labor pact protects teams over the long haul of the deal.

The main major issues that are part of the discussions between the players and Owners include the new salary cap, a rookie wage scale, free agency requirements, health benefits, and dividing the 9.3 billion dollars of revenues that will be part of the game. Today's meetings will emphasize these key topics to ensure that the Owners are all on the same page with their viewpoints on these issues.

Owners aren't expected to vote on any labor agreement in today's meeting. The deadline is nearing for a labor agreement to occur to keep the league from missing any training camp, and preseason games. Preseason is more profitable for the Owners than the players, because the players don't start receiving their salaries until the regular season begins. It's estimated that the league could lose close to a billion dollars in revenues if preseason games are missed. The Owner meetings today should create a lot more clarity on the key topics effecting the future labor agreement between the players and Owners.
