Some veteran players the victims of cuts with new NFL salary cap limits

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports Writer

With the new salary cap limits set in stone for the NFL, veteran players with lofty salaries will be the victims with teams that are currently over the cap. With teams forced to work under the 120 million dollar cap, and rookie salaries under more control with the new CBA deal, veteran players with high price tags are sure to be the victims with teams needing to trim down on salaries.

The Dallas Cowboys, and Baltimore Ravens were two examples of teams that were over the salary cap who cut high salary veteran players to make room under the new salary figure. A couple of veterans that the Cowboys released included, wide receiver Roy Williams, running back Marion Barber, and offensive lineman Leonard Davis.

The Ravens cut key veteran members from their 2010 team, which include running back Willis McGahee, tight-end Todd Heap, and wide receiver Derrick Mason. The moves by both teams saved the teams 15 to 20 million in cap dollars for the upcoming season. With teams forced to make a number in such a short time, other high priced veterans around the league will soon become cap casualties.

Other veterans that will either be released or traded include Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnett who finished last year on the injured reserve list. Barnett met with Packers General Manager Ted Thompson earlier in the week after arriving for training camp to begin workouts with the team. The New York Giants also released veteran lineman Shaun O'Hara in attempts to get under the salary cap. The Giants were about 6 million dollars over the salary cap coming into the 2011 season.

With dollars a premium for teams above, or near the salary cap threshold veteran players with large dollar figures who don't produce as they once did will ultimate be the victims with how the league operates. Other names that may be part of this list shortly include high priced running back Reggie Bush, and quarterback Donovan McNabb. The Washington Redskin quarterback signed a large deal during the end of the 2010 season, and his salary number is around 14 million for the 2011 season. The Redskins are surely not going to pay McNabb that number so they're currently in trade talks with the Vikings on trading McNabb for a 6th draft pick. The Vikings want to have McNabb restructure his salary before they make the trade with the Redskins. Saints running back Reggie Bush is another veteran who has a salary number of 11 million dollars for this coming season. The Saints drafted rookie running back Mark Ingram out of Alabama in this year's draft, and the Saints definitely don't want to commit to Bush's 11 million dollar salary. If the two sides aren't able to come up with a restructured salary for 2011 Reggie Bush will probably be the next veteran cut before the season starts.

Veterans will have to focus even more on their guaranteed signing bonus when signing contracts because in a league with a stringent salary cap for all teams across the board. Once production drops for a veteran, or a team is able to sign a younger player for a lot less money the veteran with the high salary cap number will be the first option for a team trim off its roster.

The NFL Lockout is finally over after 134 days of uncertainty

Umaru Lamin Sports Writer, DGT Sports Writer

It was a very drawn out process between the NFL Players, and Owners but the two sides finally came to an agreement on Monday to end the 134 day lock-out. A process that seemed to be up and down throughout finally ended with both sides giving up a little, and getting a little to reach an agreement. The new collective bargaining will last 10 years in duration with no opt out clause for either side. The final points that caused a frenzy by the NFLPA on Friday after the Owners agreed on their own proposal deteriorated after it came to light that the players didn't even have the chance to review the drafted document. The weekend was somewhat of a cooling off period for the NFLPA to evaluate their documents and also come up with their own revisions of key points that they felt needed to be addressed.

The two sides were finally able to iron out the minor points that enabled both sides to put pen to paper and officially finalize the agreement. Teams will be officially able to start speaking with players on Tuesday and they can begin to sign players as early as Friday. Training camps will start to open this Wednesday, and teams can begin waiver players as early as Thursday. The players still have to vote to recertify as a Union, and after that process they'll have to have a final vote on the new CBA.

The major framework of the new agreement were finalized about a week ago but with the salary cap, and minimum spending agreed that teams were required to spend. The minor hiccup that caused the last minute rift may never fully be revealed but it was major enough to cast doubt into the eyes of the players. But whatever those hiccups where they were quickly alleviated in time to make an announcement early Monday morning. Roger Goodell, and DeMaurice Smith were all smiles on Monday with the news that football is back.

One of the key milestones that must be stated with the new CBA is the 10 year duration of the new pact between both sides. Their will be a decade of labor peace in the most prosperous sport in the U.S. for the next ten years and now the activities will move from the negotiating table to the football field which is what the fans truly enjoy the most.

NFL Owners vote 31 to 0 to ratify new Labor Deal

Umaru Lamin Writer, DGT Sports

The NFL Owners voted unanimously to ratify the new labor agreement between the League and the Players today. The vote was 31 to 0 in favor with the Los Angeles Raiders abstaining from a vote. The agreements duration is 10 years in length without any cutoffs.

The next steps are now for the Players to vote on ratification. The labor deal calls for a salary cap of 120 million, with a 99 percent cash spend in 2011. Roger Goodell announces Hall of Fame Game to be cancelled.

No Player vote today on new CBA. Owners to meet in Atlanta on Thursday.

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

It was thought that today the NFL Players would vote on the new CBA agreement that the two sides have been ironing out the last couple months. But the players didn't take part in any vote to decide if they would ratify the collective bargaining agreement. The President of the NFLPA, and former player Kevin Mawae informed NFL.COM that the players aren't operating on any July 21st deadline. Mawae stated that the goal of the NFL Players is to see what's on the table, and to get the best deal possible for the players.

From the Owners perspective NFL Lead Negotiator Jeff Pash stated that he expects the Owners, and Players to vote on an agreement Thursday with a new pact in place shortly after. The Owners are scheduled to meet in Atlanta for meetings tomorrow where a vote could take place. Atlanta is the same place where the Owners voted in 2008 to end the CBA that was in existence between both sides. With 32 teams holding a vote in the CBA ratification process 3/4 or 24 teams are needed to vote in favor of the new CBA for the Owners to be in agreement. Roger Goodell was at the Atlanta airport on Wednesday meeting with 9 of 10 members of the NFL Labor Committee ironing out the final details of the proposed agreement.

From the looks of things it looks as if the Players may have a few issues they need to iron out before they feel a deal meets their liking. The lawsuit against the Owners has 10 named plaintiffs that must sign off the agreement to throw out the lawsuit. A couple players who lost the most with the uncapped year in 2010 where Patriots G Logan Mankins, and Chargers WR Vincent Jackson. Both players were 5th year veterans last year who were forced into restricted free-agency, and who were later tendered contracts by their respective teams that were below market value. Jackson, and Mankins may want special considerations attached to their status as free-agents who lost out the most from the prior CBA.

Free Agent frenzy set to take place in the NFL within the next week

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports Writer

With an NFL labor deal close between the Players, and Owners the league will finally be set to open for business. With the new labor deal set to allow unrestricted free agency to players with expired contracts with at least 4 years of service in the league teams will have to have a master plan to sign players on the market starting with their own free agents. The number of available free agents could be as high as 450 players. Due to the extended lockout the time to sign players will be the shortest during the free agency era.

Owners, Players, and Agents will have to have a master plan to position themselves for the frenzy that will take place shortly. Teams will need to develop a board that itemizes the order in which they go after key free agents while staying at the 123 million dollar salary cap threshold for the up and coming 2011 season. A team like the Pittsburgh Steelers are already roughly 10 million dollars over the proposed salary cap figure. The Oakland Raiders are another team already with a high salary cap number around 100 million with the signing of Richard Seymour, and Stanford Routt before the lockout took place. Teams already over the cap, or close to hitting the cap number will have to be very judicious on who they re-sign or players they attract from other teams.

The week of July 25th will likely officially become the starting period where players can begin to sign contracts. The massive pool of players who will be available during that time will undoubtedly have Agents cell phones ringing from calls by General Managers, and other team personnel. Couple that with teams having to sign their own rookie draft picks, and add to that rookie free agents who weren't drafted creates a position with a lot of moving parts in terms of player signees. Teams that already have a plan in place before the process takes place will prove to be the most successful during the free agency period.

Owners and Players ironed out major issues in yesterday's meeting

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

The NFL Players and Owners overcame a major hurdle in the negotiation yesterday by agreeing on the salary cap number for the new labor deal, as well as the salary cap for rookie contracts. The new salary cap for the league looks like it will be around 120 million dollars a year. An additional 21 million dollars will be spent on benefits for players. The salary cap will allow for an additional 3 million dollars in the first year for teams that are already over that figure. That will allow teams like the Pittsburg Steelers, and Dallas Cowboys the opportunity to adjust to the new salary cap figure.

The salaries spent on rookies will be reduced by 50 percent under the proposal discussed by Owners and Players. Owners will have the option of guaranteeing the 5th year of rookie contracts. However rookies will have the benefit of their 5th year salaries averaged against the salaries of the top players at their positions. This will allow for teams to have a little more control over players that are top performers at their position for that 5th year, and also allowing teams to let go of players who haven't performed up to their first contracts.

The next action item between the two sides is Owners wanting right of first refusal for upcoming Free Agents. Players on the other hand want unrestricted Free Agent rights for players with 4 four years of service. This seems like the next major issue that Owners and Players will have to work out. Everything seems to be lining up for a signed agreement in the coming weeks for both sides. If the sides don't come to an agreement the leagues stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars each week that preseason games are missed.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (10 to 1)

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

We conclude the analysis of the Top 100 players by listing the top 10 players in the NFL today. The list doesn't come as a surprise containing the greats like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Adrian Peterson on the offensive side of the ball. And on defense the top players include Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, and Darrelle Revis. The league's best are consistent Pro Bowl, and All Pro selections who seem to put up big numbers year after year. We keep our eyes open on how these top performers rank in the 2011 season.

10. J. Peppers Bears, DE

Julius Peppers a 9 year Pro had another Pro Bowl season in 2010 after signing with the Chicago Bears. Peppers made his 3rd straight Pro Bowl, and his 6th since he's been in the league. Peppers made a big impact in 2010 with 8 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, and 54 tackles. Peppers played like a Top 10 player in 2010. Peppers will be in his second year of the big deal he signed with the Bears so he'll have to play with the same motivation, and ferocity to make the Top 10 list again in 2011.

9. D. Brees Saints, QB

Drew Brees is a 5 time Pro Bowler who finished his 10th year in 2010. Brees was the leader of the Saints high powered offense passing for 33 touchdowns in 2010. Surprisingly Brees had a high number of interceptions, 22 in 2010 as well. He'll have to cut down on that number to make the Top 10 in 2011. Brees did throw for 4,600 yards last year, and you can look for the high powered Saints offense to light up the score board again in 2011.

8. D. Revis Jets, CB

Darrelle Revis a 4 year Pro, who has made the last 3 Pro Bowls is the best cover Corner in the NFL today. Revis consistently shut down the league's best Wide Receivers week in, week out in 2010. Revis wasn't able to record any interceptions in 2010 simply because opposing teams didn't throw the football his way. The trend should continue of teams not throwing passing in his direction, and if they do look for an increase in his interception total. Revis should be another Top 10 performer in 2011.

7. A. Johnson Texans, WR

Andre Johnson is an 8 year Pro, who has 3 straight Pro Bowl selections, and 5 total selections during his career. Johnson suffered through a serious ankle injury much of the 2010 season missing 3 full games for the Texans. Johnson is considered the game's best Wide Receiver, and he was still able to receiver for over 1,200 yards, and catch 86 passes in 2010. Johnson was only able to catch 8 touchdowns last year, and he'll have to improve on that number to maintain the title as the game's best Wide-out. Andres Johnson at 100 percent should post big reception, and touchdown numbers for the 2011 season.

6. T. Polamalu Steelers, S

Troy Polamalu is an 8 year Pro who is a 6 time Pro Bowler for the Steelers. Polamalu is one of the game's best safeties. Polamalu was all over the field again in 2010 on run, and passing plays for the Steelers. Polamalu stats included 7 interceptions, 63 tackles, and 1 sack in 14 games played in 2010. Polamalu is one of the best playmakers in the NFL today, and his ranking in the Top 10 is a justified rating. Polamalu's talent, and abilities will keep him in the Top 10 for some years to come.

5. E. Reed Ravens, S

Ed Reed a 7 time Pro Bowler with 9 years in the NFL totaled 8 interceptions with the Ravens in 2010 in only 10 games. Reed was out the first 6 games with a serious hip injury but came back to be a really big playmaker for the Ravens secondary. Reed is one of the biggest playmakers in the history of the NFL at the safety position. Injuries have slowed Reed down over the past couple of years but he continues to be a ball hawk on passing situations.

4. R. Lewis Ravens, LB

Ray Lewis a 15 year Pro, and 12 time Pro Bowl selection continues to put up big numbers at the Linebacker position for the Ravens. Lewis totaled 139 tackles with the Ravens in 2010, leading the Ravens defense in tackling. Lewis is Mr. Consistency on the football field with his uncanny ability to stop running backs in their tracks. Everyone keeps anticipating the day when Lewis slows down but it hasn't happened quite as yet. I look for another strong year from a freakish athlete in his 16th season.

3. A. Peterson Vikings, RB

Adrian Peterson posted a 4th Pro Bowl appearance in his 4th year in the NFL in 2010. Peterson was able to run for close to 1,300 yards, and post 12 touchdowns as the Vikings leading Running Back. Peterson was able to cut back his fumbles to only one during the entire 2010 season. Peterson was a bright spot in what was a rather dismal season for the Minnesota Vikings. Look for Peterson to have another break-out year in 2011 justifying his ranking as one of the best players in the NFL.

2. P. Manning Colts, QB

Peyton Manning a 13th year Pro, and 11 time Pro Bowler makes the list at the number 2 spot. It could easily be argued that Manning is the top player in the NFL today. In 2010 season that saw the Colts lose many key players to injuries, Manning was still able to throw for 33 touchdowns during the year. I didn't like his 17 interceptions during the season but a lot of that was attributed to new Receivers running routes for Colts during the year. Manning will have Dallas Clark back healthy in 2011 and he should rank at either the No.1 or No. 2 spot in 2011.

1. T. Brady Patriots, QB

Tom Brady an 11th year Pro, and 6 time Pro Bowler put up excellent numbers in 2010 to lead the Patriots to the best record during the regular season. Brady threw for 36 touchdowns during the 2010 campaign with only 4 interceptions. Brady was able to put up strong numbers after trading away Randy Moss during the season, and having to play with 2 rookie tight-ends during the year. Brady is a Top 2 talent in the NFL and he will put up strong numbers again in 2011 for the Patriots.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (20 to 11)

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

We are now at the cream of the crop of the Top 100 rankings. We analyze players 20 down to 11 in the NFL. These are the difference makers who receive all the headlines justifiably so. Let's take a look at the game changers who are considered the league's best. Let me know your own analysis of the players ranked 20 to 11.

20. M. Vick Eagles, QB

Michael Vick an 8th year Pro earned his 4th Pro Bowl appearance during the 2010 season. Vick had a MVP type year in his second year back after serving time in prison. Vick passed for 21 touchdowns in 12 games of action for the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick was able to put up comeback player of the year type of stats after serving as the 3rd Quarterback for the Eagles in 2009. Vick is ascending up the list as a Top 20 player in the NFL. His dynamic nature as a passer and runner make him one of the league's best.

19. C. Matthews Packers, LB

Clay Matthews had a Defensive MVP type performance in his 2nd year as a Packer linebacker. Matthews was many outlets Defensive Player of the Year in 2010 totaling 13.5 sacks, and 60 tackles. Matthews made his 2nd Pro Bowl appearance in his second season in the league. Matthews distinguished himself as one of the best edge rushers in the 2010 season. Matthews has already branded himself after only 2 years is the league, and another standout year in 2011 will continue his accession in the Top 20 rankings.

18. N. Asomugha Raiders, CB

Nnamdi Asomugha a 8th year NFL Pro is labeled one of the best cover Corners in the NFL. Asomugha made his 3rd straight Pro Bowl appearance in 2010 after basically shutting down his side of the football field. Asomugha didn't record any interceptions in 2010 due in part to opposing teams not throwing the ball in his direction. Asomugha is will be one of the prized free-agents this summer and he'll be a Top 25 player again in 2011.

17. H. Ngata Ravens, DT

Haloti Ngata is a 5 year NFL Pro who is already considered the best interior Defensive lineman in the game. Ngata has made 3 straight Pro Bowl appearances after achieving the honors in 2010. Ngata posted 5.5 sacks, and 63 tackles at an interior position which routinely receives double and triple teams. Ngata comes off the ball like no other player in the NFL while providing protection for Ray Lewis of the Ravens. Ngata is only in his 5th year so he should be a mainstay in the Top 20 for years to come.

16. C. Woodson Packers, CB

Charles Woodson put together a Pro Bowl performance for the 7th time in 2010 of his 13 year career. Woodson is a Defensive back who plays all over the field. During the 2010 season Woodson recording 2 interceptions, 2 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, and 92 tackles. Woodson can be considered the league's best all-around Defensive back, who the offense must always account for. The only drawback in 2011 is that Woodson will be in his 14th season but a Top 30 performance is certainly attainable.

15. D. Freeney Colts, DE

Dwight Freeney posted another double digit sack year resulting in his 6th Pro Bowl selection in his 9 years of service in the NFL. Freeney totaled 10 sacks in 2010, causing havoc at the blind side of NFL QB's. Freeney is as quick as they come at the Defensive end position, and he hasn't seemed to slow down after 9 years in the league. The issue I have with Freeney is that his one dimension is rushing the Quarterback. However in the NFL pass rushers are always at a premium. Look for Freeney to post similar double digit sack numbers in 2011 leading to another Top 20 ranking after next season.

14. L. Fitzgerald Cardinals, WR

Larry Fitzgerald a 7 year Pro, with 5 Pro Bowl selections was the victim of lacking a strong Quarterback in 2010. Fitzgerald was only able to register 6 touchdowns in 2010, with 1,100 total yards receiving. Those are strong numbers for any other Receiver in the game, but not for Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald will need to have a bounce back year even though teams continue to key on him as the main target on the Cardinals offense. Fitzgerald has Top 10 talent but the question is will he have a Quarterback that can feed him the ball in 2011?

13. C. Johnson Titans, RB

Chris Johnson put together another solid season in his 3rd year as a Pro, which also resulted in his 3rd Pro Bowl selection. Johnson wasn't able to match the 2,000 yards he posted in 2009, but he still rushed for over 1,300 yards, and 11 touchdowns. Johnson is one of the two best Running Backs in the league, and with a possible rookie at Quarterback, Johnson should be the focal point of the Titans offense. Defenses will be keying on Johnson but look for him to post 1,400 plus yards, and 12 plus touchdowns in 2011. An even bigger year will place him into the Top 10 of the NFL's ranking in 2011.

12. D. Ware Cowboys, LB

DeMarcus Ware a 6 year NFL Pro, and 5 time Pro Bowler is the leading sack man in the NFL totaling 15.5 sacks in 2010. Ware is the best pass rusher in the game today. Ware is as strong as an ox and he puts fear into opposing offensive lineman. Ware will need to show more leadership on the defense side after the Cowboys were eliminated from playoff contention early in 2010. If Ware shows the leadership in 2011, and he is able to put up similar numbers he'll definitely make the Top 10 for this upcoming season.

11. A. Rodgers Packers, QB

Aaron Rodgers a 6 year Pro, has only one Pro Bowl selection to his name. The Quarterback position is always a tough position to be nominated at for both Conferences. Rodgers led the Packers to the Super Bowl Championship in 2010, and he is finally starting to get the recognition that he deserves. Rodgers was able to lead the Packers to the title without many of his key weapons who were out due to injury. With a full complement of players in 2011 Rodgers might be able to throw for over 30 touchdown receptions while attaining a Top 10 ranking.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (30 to 21)

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer, DGT Sports

30. M. Jones Jaguars, RB

Maurice Jones-Drew is a 5 year Pro, who has made the Pro-Bowl the last 2 years of his career. Jones-Drew scored 5 touchdowns in the 2010 season in which he missed two games due to injury. Jones-Drew also rushed for over 1,300 yards in 14 games in his 5th season. Jones-Drew is one of the toughest running backs in the NFL, and I look for him to score at least 10 rushing touchdowns in 2011. With a healthy year in 2011 Jones-Drew should ascend higher in the Top 100 list

29. D. Jackson Eagles, WR

Desean Jackson is a 3 year NFL player who has a Pro-Bowl appearance in 2009, and 2010. Jackson's most impressive stat was his 22.5 yards per catch which lead Wide Receivers in 2010. Jackson was only able to register 6 touchdown passes in a season where he suffered a serious head injury where he was forced to miss a couple of games. Jackson is one of the best young Wideouts in the NFL, who will have a great touchdown reception year in 2011. I look for Jackson to have a performance that has him listed in the Top 20 after the 2011 season.

28. J. Long Dolphins, T

Jake Long a former No. 1 pick in the NFL draft has made the Pro-Bowl in all three years of his football career. Long man handles his defensive responsibility week in and week out during the NFL season. Long is only three years into his career so it shouldn't suprise you if he's consistently on this list for many years to come.

27. C. Johnson Detroit, WR

Calvin Johnson is a 4 year NFL player who made his inaugural Pro-Bowl appearance in 2010. Johnson put up Pro-Bowl touchdown number scoring 12 touchdowns from the Receiver position. Johnson is definitely climbing the list as a Top 25 football player in the NFL, and a strong year in 2011 could possibly land him in the Top 10 after a big year. Johnson brings strong tangible skills with his length, speed, and extraordinary leaping ability. Johnson is definitely a top Wideout in the NFL.

26. P. Rivers Chargers, QB

Philip Rivers continues to put up excellent numbers after completing his 8th year in the NFL. Rivers is a 3 time Pro-Bowler who achieved the honor in 2010 after throwing for over 4,700 yards, and 30 touchdowns. Rivers was able to single handedly lead the Chargers to victories after having to deal with holdouts, and injuries to major weapons through the entire 2010 season. With a healthy roster in 2011 Rivers should put up similar strong passing numbers to lead the Chargers.

25. A. Foster Texans, RB

Arian Foster had a break-out Pro-Bowl year during his second season in the NFL. Foster totaled 1,600 rushing yards, and 16 rushing touchdowns in 2010. The rushing touchdown number was far and away the league leader last year. The main question is will Foster be able to put up similar numbers as defenses place more emphasis on stopping the Texans running game. If he's able to match 2010's stats Foster will be considered a Top 20 player, but that may be a tough task in a league filled with adjustments.

24. R. White Falcons, WR

Roddy White has 6 years in the NFL, and he led the league with 115 receptions in 2010 which was a 3rd straight Pro-Bowl appearance. White was also a leader with 10 touchdown receptions to lead the high power Falcons passing game. White is in the crop of leagues best receivers, and his numbers in 2011 may even improve on the touchdown side. Look for another Top 25 performance by White in 2010.

23. P. Willis 49ers, LB

Patrick Willis has made the Pro-Bowl in all 4 of his years in the NFL. Willis is one of the leagues best tacklers who is strong both against the run and pass. Willis registered 6 sacks in 2010, and 128 combined tackles. Willis is still elevating his status as a Linebacker in the NFL and he could easily join the Top 15 players in the NFL in 2011.

22. A. Gates Chargers, TE

Antonio Gates is simply the best Tight End in the NFL after completing his 8th year in 2010. Gates has made 7 straight Pro-Bowls as a Tight End. Gates was only able to play in 10 games in 2010 posting 9 touchdown receptions. Gates will have to comeback and play the entire year in 2011, and if he is healthy he shouldn't have a problem posting double digit touchdown receptions.

21. J. Harrison Steelers, LB

James Harrison an 8 year NFL Linebacker made his 4th straight Pro-Bowl after the 2010 season. Harrison totaled 10.5 sacks, and 100 tackles as one of the key players on the Steelers defense. Harrison had a tough year in 2010 relating to penalties, and league mandated fines for hits to the helmet, but it was still a very productive year for Harrison. If the new rules to protect head related injuries doesn't slow down Harrison aggressiveness he should post another strong statistical year. Harrison may have reached his ceiling at the 21 spot, but he is definitely one of the leagues best pass rushing linebackers.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (40 to 31)

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

We move forward with our list of the NFL's Top players, listing players 40 to 31 on the Top 100 list. We'll see who makes the list as we climb up the list of the top players in the NFL. Please post your comment on your analysis of the players listed.

40. T. Suggs Ravens, LB

Terrell Suggs a 8 year player is one of the best linebackers in the league today. Suggs is a 4-time Pro Bowler who received the honor during the 2010 season. Suggs recorded double digit sacks in 2011 registering 11 sacks. Suggs is a one-dimensional linebacker whose primary attribute is to rush the passer. Suggs should have another double digit sack season and should maintain his position in the rankings.

39. L. Mankins Patriots, G

Logan Mankins is a 6 year Pro is considered one of the best Guards in the NFL. Mankins is a 3 time Pro Bowler who achieved the honor in 2010. Mankins held out the first part of 2010, however he still was able to achieve Pro-Bowl status. Mankins assist the Patriots with his able to seal defensive tackles on run plays, and hold rushers on passing downs. Mankins is a very solid Guard who could even see his position improve in 2011.

38. S. Jackson Rams, RB

Steven Jackson a 7 year player who is a 3 time Pro Bowler who was selected to the 2010 team. Jackson didn't have a high touchdown output scoring only 6 rushing TD's in 2010. Jackson was able to rush for over 1,200 yards over 16 games last year. The key with Jackson is can he stay healthy throughout the year. If Jackson is healthy in 2011 look for him to rank in the top 30. He should have a bigger year in 2011 due in part to expectations to a double digit touchdown year.

37. J. Vilma Saints, LB

Johnathan Vilma has been in the league for 7 years, and he is a 3 time Pro-Bowler. Vilma is the leader of the Saints defense which has the uncanny ability to cause a lot of turnovers. Vilma made the Pro Bowl in 2010 registering 105 tackles, and 4 sacks on the Quarterback. Vilma is a consistent linebacker who should put up similar stats in 2011 as the Saints defensive leader.

36. J. Witten Cowboys, TE

Jason Witten is a 8 year NFL player who has made the Pro Bowler 7 straight years. Witten has some of the best pair of hands in the NFL. Witten totaled 1,000 receiving yards in 2010. Witten caught 9 touchdowns last year with Tony Romo out most of the year. With Romo back Witten should have another big year in 2011. Witten's consistency will keep him ranked in the Top 40 this coming year.

35. V. Wilfork Patriots, DT

Vince Wilfork a 7 year Pro is arguably the best nose tackle in the NFL today. Wilfork is a 2010 Pro Bowl selection, who has been named to the team 3 times. Wilfork is the key to the Patriots defense as he receives double teams on every position. Wilfork is a stable force for on the Pats defense. Wilfork should maintain a similar position in 2011.

34. J. Evans Saints, OT

Jahri Evans is a 5 year Pro who is already one of the best lineman in the NFL. Evans has made the Pro Bowl the last 2 years, and he is one of the anchors of the Saints offensive line. Evans is trending upwards on the list and if he continues his dominant play Evans can make the Top 25 in 2011. Looks for Evans to have another dominating season in playing a major role in leading the Saints to a high octane offense this year.

33. J. Charles Chiefs, RB

Jamaal Charles is 3 year Pro who made his 1st Pro Bowl in 2010. Charles rushed for nearly 1,500 yards, averaging over 6 yards per carry. Charles is as explosive as they come from the running back position. Charles is ascending into one of the great young backs, but the question remains whether he can take the physical hits with his small stature. Charles is putting up historic numbers with his yards per carry statistics. If he averages close to 6 yards per carry in 2011 he'll make me a believer and he'll rank in the Top 20.

32. D. Hester Bears, WR

Devin Hester is a 5 year player in the NFL who is explosive every time he has the ball in his hand. Hester is a 2010 Pro Bowler who already leads the NFL all-time in combined punt return, and kickoff return touchdowns. Hester is on the field more as a Wideout which has affected some of his productivity. Hester produced only 475 passing yards, on 40 receptions in 2010. Hester must show that he can be a contributor as a Wide Receiver to be as high on the list in 2011.

31. R. Wayne Colts, WR

Reggie Wayne is a 10 year Pro, who has made the Pro Bowl the last 5 years. Wayne is Mr. Consistent from the Wide Receiver position. Wayne totaled 6 touchdowns in 2010, with 1,300 yards receiving. Wayne must total double digits in touchdowns in 2011 to maintain his spot for this coming season. Wayne is coming into his 11th year, and with the competition at the Wideout position it's imperative that he puts up big numbers in 2011.

Deadline soon arriving for decision on preseason Hall of Fame Game

Umaru Lamin, DGT Sports Writer

The deadline is nearing for the NFL Players, and Owners to agree on terms for a new labor contract before preseason games will be missed. The first game to affected is the annual Hall of Fame Game, scheduled for August 7th between the Chicago Bears, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Right now the NFL Players, and Owners are working on the framework of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, but time is arriving quickly before the training camp reporting date nears. We're already into the first week of July and an official labor deal hasn't been agreed on between the two sides. Players and Owners are meeting in New York City this week to iron out the final parameters of the labor contract. Lawyers from both sides are attempting to draw up documentation for the half a dozen issues that both sides have been negotiating. The theory is that it will take two weeks to finalize paperwork once both sides come to an agreement.

My opinion is that both sides seem to be very close to meeting one another eye to eye on a final agreement. A nine billion dollar a year business that is in the homes of millions of Americans every week needs time to iron out differences that will be in agreement for the next 6 to 10 years. The back and forth leveraging that takes place is normal in these type of negotiations where 1 percentage point in a deal can add up to millions of dollars in the labor contract. The dotting of the I's, and crossing of the T's will seem like one is attempting to pull out teeth but it should be the final stage of the starting point to a 2011 NFL season. The NFL has become America's pastime and if we just wait out this last couple of weeks we should see the great game back out on the field.

Former N.C. State starting Quarterback Russell Wilson transfers to Wisconsin

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

Former N.C. State starting Quarterback Russell Wilson will choose to sign with the Wisconsin Badgers with his last year of eligibility. Wilson a 4th round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies had been playing baseball for their minor league Asheville Tourist batting .228, with 3 home runs, and 15 RBI in 16 games. Wilson decided to join the Rockies minor league team instead of participating in spring practice with N.C. State. Tom O'Brien, head coach of N.C. State named Mike Glennon as the team's starter, and he gave Wilson his unconditional release.

Wilson had visits to the football programs of Auburn, and Wisconsin leading up to his decision yesterday. Wilson will have about one month before Wisconsin opens its fall practice August 1st in preparation for the upcoming college football season. Wilson had excellent numbers as the Wolfpack’s starting Quarterback last season throwing for 3,563 yards, and 28 touchdowns. Wisconsin is one of the favorites in the Big Ten in 2011 and with Wilson's addition the school has the potential to compete for a national championship.

This signing is big news for the Wisconsin football program. Wisconsin has never really had a top flight Quarterback, and Wilson brings his 3 years of experience as a starter to a team that already has a pretty potent offense. Wisconsin has a tough schedule with an early conference game against Nebraska, and two road games against Michigan State, and Ohio State later on in the year. If the Badgers are able to pull out those victories they have a good shot at going undefeated. Bret Bielema led the 2010 Wisconsin Badgers team to a Rose Bowl appearance, and with the returning starters coming back in 2011 the team looks like a top 5 football program in the country.

Wilson stated that he's a competitor, and he is willing to come to Wisconsin to compete for the starting Quarterback position. Wilson also stated that he was impressed by the Wisconsin coaching staff, fans, and players on the team. Wilson likes the system that the Badgers run, and he feels totally blessed to be in this situation.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (50 to 41)

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

The countdown continues with the NFL Top 100. We're to the point where all the players ranked are now household names. Today we rank players from 50 down to 41. Many of the players ranked are multi Pro Bowl selections.

50. W. Welker Patriots, WR

Wes Welker a 7th year Pro is a perennial league leader in receptions. Welker caught 86 passes, and 7 touchdowns last year after missing the ladder portion of the 2009 season with a torn ACL. Welker is arguably the best slot Receiver in the NFL today, and he has 3 Pro Bowl selections to his arsenal. Welker has had a year to recover from the serious injury he suffered in 2009, so look him to bounce back with a 100 reception season for the slot position.

49. B. Urlacher Bears, LB

Brian Urlacher is an 11 year Pro who bounced back from a injury plagued season in 2009. Urlacher was selected to his 7th Pro Bowl appearance in 2010 after registering 125 tackles. Urlacher is one of the best middle linebackers in the NFL, and he has the motor that always keeps him around the football. Urlacher was able to register 125 tackles in 2010 in leading the Bears defense to the NFC Championship Game. Look for Urlacher to have another consistent year in 2011, and possibly make the top 50 again next year.

48. C. Bailey Broncos, DB

Champ Bailey completed his 12th year in 2010 making his 10th Pro Bowl appearance. Bailey is still a shut down Corner in a passing league with a lot of excellent young Wide Receivers. Bailey totaled only 2 interceptions in 2010, primarily because opposing Quarterbacks didn't throw in his direction. Bailey still has the ability to shut down one half of the football field after 12 years in the league. Bailey delivers the consistency that should net him a similar position after the 2011 season.

47. N. Mangold Jets, C

Nick Mangold finished his 5th season in 2010 with his 3rd straight Pro Bowl selection. Mangold is the anchor of the Jets offensive line that features a run happy offense. Mangold is strong with both run, and pass blocking and his performance should continue to place him in the Top 50. Look for another strong year in 2011 for Mangold and another Pro Bowl selection.

46. T. Gonzalez Atlanta, TE

Tony Gonzalez made his 11th Pro Bowl in 2010 in his 14th year in the NFL. Gonzalez was able a key target for Matt Ryan on key passing situations in 2010. Gonzalez is on the back side of his career, but I look for him to put up solid numbers again in 2011. A top 50 ranking might be a stretch but don't put it past the future Hall of Famer.

45. D. Bowe Chiefs, WR

Dwayne Bowe had a touchdown filled season in his 4th year recording 15 TD's from the Receiver position. Bowe is a very explosive Wide Out who is also very physical off the line of scrimmage. Bowe has the talent to climb into the top 30 if he's able to match his touchdown output in 2010. Bowe is difficult cover on the outside and his maturity in his 4th season show he has what it takes to be one of the leagues best Wide Out.

44. R. Mathis Colts, DE

Robert Mathis has played 8 years in the NFL, and he completed the 2010 season with his 3rd Pro Bowl selection. Mathis completes the duo as a tandem end with Dwight Freeney. Mathis recorded 11 sacks in 2010, and he has one of the best motors on the defensive side of the football. Mathias will record another double sack number in 2011, while making the top 100 for the coming season.

43. J. Thomas Cleveland, OT

Joe Thomas completed his 4th year with the Browns, and he has made Pro Bowl in each of those seasons. Thomas is one of the best left tackles in the NFL, and he has been each of the last few seasons. Thomas is very consistent on pass protection, and sealing Defensive lineman on running plays. Joe Thomas will be a Pro Bowler in 2011, and he will climb higher in the Top 100 ranking.

42. M. Turner Falcons, RB

Michael Turner completed his 7th year as a Pro Bowl selection for the 2nd time in his career. Turner rushed for close to 1,300 yards, and 12 touchdowns. Turner is one of the most physical Running Backs in the NFL, and he is a key component to the Falcons offensive. Turner should maintain his position in 2011 by posting similar rushing, and touchdown numbers. Look for another top 40 ranking in 2011 for Turner.

41. B. Roethlisberger Steelers, QB

Ben Roethlisberger was able to bounce back after sitting out the first 4 games of his 7th season. Roethlisberger is one of the top Quarterbacks in the NFL, however he has only 1 Pro Bowl appearance primarily because of the competition at the Quarterback position in the AFC. Roethlisberger was still able to throw 17 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions in leading the Steelers to a Super Bowl appearance. Look for Roethlisberger to put up stronger numbers in a full season in 2011, where he might be able to crack the top 30 ranking.

Sources say Terrell Owens had ACL Surgey on knee this past month

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

Sources say Terrell Owens had ACL surgery on one of his knees this past month. Owens the 37 year old Wide Receiver completed his 15th year with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010. Owens apparently hurt his knee while filming The T.O. Show, according to sources from ESPN. Look for middle to later part of November as the earliest time before Owens is able to return. Owens trails only Jerry Rice on the all-time NFL receiving yards, and touchdown reception list.

Owens was unavailable for comment on the reported injury. Owens was a free agent who was looking to sign with possible teams going into his 16th year. Owens has been known for being a quick healer when dealing with serious injuries. Don't count Owens out, as he'll look to prove his doubters wrong after suffering his latest setback.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (60 to 51)

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

The countdown continues with our rankings of NFL Top 100 players. We analyze the countdown from 60 to 51. We start to see the best of the best on the countdown so let's make our assessment.

60. J. Tuck Giants, DE

Jason Tuck has 6 years of services in the NFL for the New York Giants. Tuck is one of the strongest Defensive Ends in the NFL. Tuck is a two time Pro Bowler who had a strong year in 2010 posting 12 sacks for the Giants. Last year was a Pro Bowl season for Tuck who has the ability to post a high volume of tackles for a DE. Tuck totaled 76 tackles, and his ability to always be around the ball is an attribute that makes him one of the best DE in football. If Tuck stays healthy he should have another big year, and he'll possibly move up the Top 100 list.

59. J. Saturday Colts, G

Jeff Saturday is a 12 year NFL player who is arguably the best Center in the NFL. Saturday is a 5 time Pro Bowler who received the nomination in 2010. Saturday is the leader of the offensive line led by Peyton Manning. Saturday is responsible for making the calls of the highly sophisticated Colts offensive. Saturday is one of the most consistent players in the Top 100, and I look for him to maintain his same position during the 2011 season.

58. B. Lloyd Broncos, WR

Brandon Lloyd was one of the comeback players of the year in 2010. Lloyd completed his 8th year in 2010 with his first Pro Bowl selection. Lloyd led all Wide Receivers in yardage totaling almost 1,500 yards. Lloyd average over 18 yards per catch, and he was also able to post 11 touchdowns during the season. The bull's eye will be out on Lloyd to see if he's able to post similar numbers in 2011. If will be difficult for Lloyd to fly under the radar, so look for a possible regression this year. It may be difficult for Lloyd to crack the same list at this time next year, although you have to be happy Lloyd has been able to resurrect his career.

57. A. Gurode Cowboys, C

Andre Gurode is a 9 year Pro who is a top Center in the league. Gurode is a 5 time Pro Bowler who made the honors in 2010. Gurode is the leader of the line that ignites the Cowboys explosive offensive. Gurode has made the Pro Bowl the past 3 years, and I expect him to compete for another selection in 2011. Gurode is one of the top offensive lineman in the NFL.

56. R. Rice Ravens, RB

Ray Rice has completed his 3rd year as the Ravens Running Back. Rice is a one time Pro Bowler who is ascending into the ranks as one of the NFL's best Running Backs. Rice was able to post 1,200 yards in 2010, however he only scored 5 touchdowns. Rice should improve on his touchdown numbers in 2011. I look for Rice to post double digits touchdowns, and be in contention as one of the leaders in scoring this upcoming season.

55. C. Nicks Saints, C

Carl Nicks completed his 3rd year in the NFL with his first Pro Bowl selection. Nicks is impressive player who will be one of the top lineman for years to come. Nicks is one of the anchors on the Saints line who protect Drew Brees, and the explosive Saints passing game. Nicks will continue to climb the Top 100 list, and look for him to have a higher ranking after the 2011 season.

54. A. Samuel Eagles, CB

Asante Samuel completed his 8th year in 2010 for the Eagles. Samuel has been selected to the Pro Bowl the last 4 years. Samuel posted 7 interceptions in 2010 tying him for number 2 in the league. Samuel is one of the biggest gamblers from the Defensive Back position, and he should post another high interception number in 2011. Samuel's risk taking style will post high numbers, and his ranking should stay consistent again in 2011.

53. M. Colston Saints, WR

Marques Colston completed his 5th year in the 2010 season. Colston is one of the most consistent Wide Receivers in the game today. Colston has the ability to go deep, and also catch tough passes across the middle. Surprisingly Colston doesn't have any Pro Bowl appearances but his ranking should stay consistent in the 2011 season.

52. M. Ryan Falcons, QB

Matt Ryan completed his 3rd year in 2010 with his first Pro Bowl appearance. Ryan is one of the good young Quaterbacks in the NFL who led the Falcons to the best mark in the NFC in 2010. Ryan posted 28 Touchdowns in 2010, and the Falcons where able to showcase a very explosive passing offense during the year. Ryan should be in the Top 50 after the 2011 season as the Falcons are developing into one of the best teams in the NFL. Look for Ryan to be in the Top 40 for years to come.

51. N. Suh Lions, DT

Ndamakong Suh was one of the best rookie players in the entire league in 2010. Suh posted 10 sacks as a rookie, and 66 tackles which is a high number for a Defensive Tackle. Suh was a Pro Bowler as a Rookie, and he is already considered one of the best Defensive Tackles in the league after just one season. Suh will make a dramatic climb in 2011 on the NFL Top 100 list. I look for him to be a top 20 player after the 2011 season. Suh is developing into one of the best players in the league.

Former Florida Standout Defensive Back Janoris Jenkins signs with North Alabama

Umaru Lamin, DGT Sports Writer

Former Florida Gator standout Defensive Back Janoris Jenkins signed with North Alabama Wednesday, the school announced. The Defense Back was an All-American candidate who was considered a 1st round pick in this years April NFL draft. Jenkins will play for Terry Bowden the former Auburn coach who is now in his 3rd season coaching North Alabama. Jenkins was dismissed from Florida in April after getting arrested twice in less than 3 months. Bowden talked with Jenkins former coach at Florida Urban Meyer, current coach Will Muschamp, and Athletic Director Jeremy Foley before signing the talented Cornerback.

Jenkins, 22 enters the season with one more year of college eligibility. Jenkins had considered entering the supplemental draft, but decided to come back and play football in his final season. With a strong performance for the Division II program Jenkins hopes to certify his status as a high pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (70 to 61)

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

We continue the countdown of the Top 100 NFL Players. Today we analyze the players ranked from 70 to 61. Please let us know your thoughts as the countdown continues. Please feel free to support our online advertisement sponsors.

70. M. Austin Dallas, WR

Miles Austin is a 5 year player who has been a Pro Bowler the last 2 seasons. Austin has recorded over 1,000 yards the last 2 years, leading the Cowboys in receiving yards during those years. Austin is a speedy Receiver who is one of the best in stretching a defense. Austin was without his starting QB, Tony Romo for much of last year, and his touchdowns decreased to 7 in the 2010 season. If Austin is able to get back to double digits TD's I think he'll warrant his position. However Austin is more of a one dimensional deep threat, so I look for his position in the Top 100 to drop in 2011.

69. J. Abraham Atlanta, DE

John Abraham after 11 years in the league continues to be one of the best past rush specialist in the NFL. Abraham was one of the leaders in 2010 with 13.5 sacks. Abraham is a pure pass rusher who is able to instill havoc on tackles, and Quarterbacks. Abraham is a 4 time Pro Bowler with a recent selection in 2010. Abraham is on the back side of his career so he'll have to put up big numbers again in 2011 to maintain his position.

68. A. Rolle Giants, S

Antrel Rolle has played 5 years in the leagues and has the skills to play Safety, and Corner. In his first season with the Giants as Safety Rolle is already one of the leaders of the Giants secondary. Rolle is a 2 time Pro Bowler who is strong against the run, and pass. Rolle should continue to progress up the Top 100 ranking due in part to the aggressive style of defense played by the New York Giants. Look for Rolle to put up a high interception total in 2011.

67. B. Waters Chiefs, G

Brian Waters has played 11 years, and he is one of the top Guards in the NFL. Waters is a 5 time Pro Bowler, who achieved the honor in 2010. Waters is one of the anchors of the Chiefs offensive line, and he has maintained his consistency throughout his career. Look for Waters to put up another good year but it'll be interesting to see how he performs in his 12th year in the league.

66. R. Seymour Raiders, DT

Richard Seymour a 10 year veteran in the NFL posted another Pro Bowl year with the Raiders in 2010. That gives Seymour 6 Pro Bowls during his career. Seymour is one of those Defensive Tackles that is capable of rushing the Quarterback, and also stopping the run. Seymour has produced good numbers his entire career first with the Patriots, and now with the Raiders. Seymour is the leader of the Raiders defense, and he signed a two year extension with the Raiders as the highest paid defensive player in the league. Look for Seymour to have another strong year at the DT position.

65. V. Leach Texans, FB

Vonta Leach is a 7 year Fullback who you probably never hear about in a football. Leach is arguably the best fullback in the NFL today. Leach opened holes for Arian Foster, leading to a breakout year for the 1st time Pro Bowler. Look for Leach to go unnoticed again in 2011, but he'll probably maintain the title as the best FB in the league.

64. T. Hali Chiefs, DE

Tamba Hali is a 5 year Pro who was voted to his 1st Pro Bowl in 2011. Hali is developing into one of the best Defensive Ends in the game today. Hali was a league leader in sacks in 2010 totaling 14.5 sacks for the Kansas City Chiefs. Hali is the anchor of their defensive line, and one of their leaders on defense. Hali is one of the individuals on the Top 100 that will continue to climb in the coming year. Look for Hali to crack the Top 30 for next season.

63. C. Wake Dolphins, DE

Cameron Wake completed his 3rd year in 2010, and his performance netted him his 1st Pro Bowl appearance. Wake was a league leader with 14 sacks for the Dolphins in 2010. Wake is fierce pass rusher who always seems to be chasing down the opposing Quarterback. Look for another strong year from Wake in 2011, and I look for Wake to maintain or move up on his ranking in the Top 100.

62. J. Mayo Patriots, LB

Jerod Mayo completed his 3rd year in the NFL and he already is one of the best Linebackers in the league. Mayo was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2010, and he was the league leader with 175 tackles. Mayo is like a magnet around the football that doesn't miss assignments, or tackles. Mayo is already one of the leaders of the Patriots defense, and I look for Mayo to make a significant jump into the Top 40 ranking next year. Look for multiple All Pro Selections for the 4th year Linebacker.

61. B. Marshall Dolphins, WR

Brandon Marshall is a 5 year NFL Wide Receiver who missed a couple games due to injury in 2010. Marshall is a 2 time Pro Bowler who was only able to score 3 touchdowns in 2010. Look for Marshall to have a breakout year in 2011. Marshall should increase his touchdown, and yardage output positioning him for another Pro Bowl appearance. Marshall should increase his ranking into the Top 40 after the 2011 season.

Good feedback from Owners Meeting in Chicago

By Umaru Lamin, DGT Sports Writer

Feedback on yesterday meetings in Chicago between league Owners seems pretty positive. Owners met for under five hours to clarify the key concepts, and ideas for the new labor deal. Jeff Pash, the NFL Lead Negotiator stated, "there seems to be commitment by Ownership, and players." The key points now involving the negotiations involve the splitting of revenues between Owners and players. The prior labor deals included the players receiving 55 percent of revenues, and Owners receiving 45 percent, however Owners received the first one billion dollars in revenue. The new agreement may not include the one billion dollars of revenue off the top, but instead the Owners are looking to gain 52 percent of league revenue compared to the players 48 percent of league revenues.

With league revenues expected to grow over the coming years Owners would see increase in revenue due to the growth. Players on the other hand are willing to give up some percentages of revenue if Owners are forced to spend 95 percent of cash on annual player salaries. Under a normal salary cap Owners are able to account for spending on player salaries, however a portion of that spending isn't attributed to cash spending. Under a normal cap a team can spend 100 million in one year in salary cap, but the cash number could be 90 million with 10 million accounted for during the next year. Players want more of that 100 million dollars spent on salary in cash for the present year.

Owners seem united on the philosophical ideas, and the priorities seem to be the same. The next meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, and Thursday in Boston between Owners, and players. With the momentum now in full swing it looks as if both sides are close to coming together for a new CBA agreement.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (80 to 71)

Umaru Lamin, Sports Writer DGT Sports

Yesterday we ranked the NFL Top 100 from player 90 down to 81. We continue our count down of the top players in the NFL. Today we analyze players 80 down to 71. Let's see whose part of the next 10 on the count down, and analyze if we think the player has what it takes to stick, and justify a Top 100 ranking.

80. J. Allen Minnesota, DE

Jared Allen the 7 year Defensive End had a solid season in 2010 totaling 11 sacks. However his numbers didn't compare with the 14.5 plus sacks that he wracked up the prior 3 Pro Bowl years. Allen didn't seem as explosive off the edge, though 11 sacks isn't a number one should frown upon. Teams seemed to be able to single Allen more and drop an additional man into coverage. The Vikings were one of the disappointing teams in 2010 after having high expectations coming into the year. Allen must return to his old form and put up big numbers to lead the Viking in the competitive NFC North. I look for Allen to return to form as one of the best pass rushers in the league.

79. D. Ferguson Jets, OT

D'Brickashaw Ferguson completed his 5th years as the New York Jets lineman. Ferguson was a Pro Bowler in 2010, his second consecutive year receiving the honor. Ferguson is one of the top tackles in the league, and is one of the anchors that leads the Jets ground and pound running attack. Ferguson not only leads the way in creating holes for LT, and Shonn Greene, but he is also one of the best pass blockers in the league. Ferguson will continue to climb the list as one of the leagues best lineman, and look for him to stay in the Top 100 for years to come.

78. D. Clark Colts, TE

Dallas Clark the 8 year Tight End spent most of the 2010 season on the injured reserve list. Clark finished the year with only 3 TD's after sustaining a wrist injury that he wasn't able to recover from. Clark is one of Peyton Mannings key targets, so expect Clark to rebound to his old form. Clark is a primary route runner for the Colts systematic passing game, so look for a year with 10 plus touchdowns and a return to Top 100 form.

77. C. Snee Giants, G

Chris Snee the 7 year Center is one of top C in the NFL. Snee has made the Pro Bowl 3 straight years, and he leads the running game of the run happy New York Giants offense. Snee is also responsible for pass blocking for the Giants high octane passing game as well. Centers are the QB's of the offensive line and Snee is one of the leaders of the unit for the Giants offense. Centers don't get much publicity in football, but Snee will continue to hold his position with his consistency, and toughness at the position.

76. S. Holmes Jets, WR

Santonio Holmes is a 5 year Wide Receiver who possess the ability to go deep, and also act as a possession receiver. Holmes missed the first four games of the 2010 season due to league suspension for substance abuse. When Holmes returned he quickly asserted himself as the Jets go to Wide Receiver throughout the season. Holmes was able to constantly provide big plays for the Jets in leading them to the AFC Championship game against the Steelers. Holmes is a free agent who will be able to put up numbers for 16 games in 2011. Look for the Jets to resign Holmes, and he should receive over 1,000 yards, and 10 plus touchdowns. Holmes should hold suit in the Top 100 in the upcoming 2011 season.

75. J. Ratliff Cowboys, DE

Jay Ratliff is a 6 year Defensive Tackle who creates plenty of havoc for opposing offenses. Ratliff is a 2 time Pro Bowler who received the honor in 2010. Ratliff has the rare skill of being able to stop the run, and also put pressure on opposing Quarterbacks. The Cowboys had a dissapointing 2010 season, but with Ratliff, and Ware on defense Dallas should still posses one of the best Defensive Lines in football. Ratliff will move up on the NFL Top 100 list in 2011, and look for another Pro Bowl year from the nose tackle.

74. G. Jennings Packers, WR

Greg Jennings is a 5 year Wide Receiver who is one of the best young wide outs in the NFL. Jennings was one of the key components leading the Packers to the 2010 Super Bowl Championship. Jennings was a first year Pro Bowl Receiver, which is an honor that should be of the norm in the coming years. Jennings is just a notch below the top Receivers in the game and if he stays healthy the combination with Aaron Rogers will enable Jennings to rise into the Top 50.

73. T. Cole Eagles, DE

Trent Cole has completed 6 years as a Defensive End for the Eagles. Cole has his motor running play in, play out and his numbers reflect his unrelentless pass rushing skills. Cole produced 10 sacks for the aggressive Eagles defense during the 2010 season. Cole is a 2 time Pro Bowler who simply knows how to rush the Quarterback. Cole will hold his place on the Top 100, and look for him to put up double digits sack numbers in the 2011 season.

72. T. Romo Cowboys, QB

Tony Romo is coming off a season that landed him on the injured reserve. Romo suffered a serious shoulder injury in a Monday night game in October which hampered the Cowboys 2010 season. Romo is a 3 time Pro Bowler who is one of the best Quarterbacks in the NFL. Romo will return with vigor after missing the second half of the 2010 NFL season. Romo will put up big numbers in 2011, and look for the Cowboys to make a run at the playoffs after suffering a letdown in 2010. Romo should battle Drew Brees as one of the best QB's in the NFC. Romo will climb significantly in the Top 100 ranking, and look for him to have a career year in 2011.

71. M. Williams Texans, DE

Mario Williams the one time 1st pick in the draft is a 5 year Defensive End who is a 2 time Pro Bowler. Williams is one of the strongest Defensive Ends in the NFL. Williams is a very physical edge rusher who makes his impact virtually every play he is one the field. Williams draws constant double teams from opposing offenses. Williams will continue his consistency as a top Defensive End in the NFL. Williams should post double digits sacks this year, and also contend for a Pro Bowl selection in 2011.

NFL Owners to meet in Chicago today to discuss league matters

By Umaru Lamin, DGT Sports Writer

The NFL Owners are set to meet today in Chicago today to discuss the present labor issues affecting the league. The meetings are set as a forum for the Owners to discuss the key issues that will go a long way for the league and players agreeing on a labor contract. With the outlook of the national economy not improving over the coming years Owners want the insurance that the new labor pact protects teams over the long haul of the deal.

The main major issues that are part of the discussions between the players and Owners include the new salary cap, a rookie wage scale, free agency requirements, health benefits, and dividing the 9.3 billion dollars of revenues that will be part of the game. Today's meetings will emphasize these key topics to ensure that the Owners are all on the same page with their viewpoints on these issues.

Owners aren't expected to vote on any labor agreement in today's meeting. The deadline is nearing for a labor agreement to occur to keep the league from missing any training camp, and preseason games. Preseason is more profitable for the Owners than the players, because the players don't start receiving their salaries until the regular season begins. It's estimated that the league could lose close to a billion dollars in revenues if preseason games are missed. The Owner meetings today should create a lot more clarity on the key topics effecting the future labor agreement between the players and Owners.

NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players rankings (90 to 81)

By Umaru Lamin, DGT Sports Writer

We continue our analysis of the NFL's Top 100 players, ranked by players in the National Football League. Our rankings today list players 90 down to 81. The list is starting getting real tasty. Please reply with any of your thoughts on the player rankings, or analysis.

90. J. Flacco Ravens, QB

Joe Flacco has been in the league for 3 years, and he came off an impressive 2010 season where he threw for 25 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions in leading the Ravens to a 12 win regular season. Flacco is a gifted strong armed QB who can throw the long ball as good as anyone in the league. Flacco also has the touch to drop perfect passes right into the arms of his experienced receiving corp. Flacco isn't on par with Brady, Manning, or Brees but he's a strong QB who could easily lead the Ravens into Super Bowl contention in the 2011 season. Flacco will have to put up strong numbers again to maintain his position in the NFL's Top 100 ranking.

89. A. Wilson Arizona, S

Adrian Wilson is a 10 year Safety who is very strong in supporting the run. Wilson likes playing up near the line of scrimmage, and he is also an intimidating factor on pass defense. Wilson is a 4 time Pro Bowler, who has achieved the honor 3 years in a row. Wilson totaled 86 tackles in 2010 for the struggling Arizona Cardinals. Wilson might begin to slow down due in part to this being his 11th season in the league. With all the younger Safeties and Corners coming into the league Wilson will have to have a strong year to stay on the list.

88. V. Davis 49ers, TE

Vernon Davis enters his 6th season as one of the best Tight Ends in the NFL. Davis has one Pro Bowl appearance after getting beat out by Tony Gonzales in the 2010 season. Davis had over 900 yards receiving in 2010 as defenses began to key on him as one of the primary targets to stop in the 49ers offense. Davis should come back strong in 2011 with Harbaugh taking over as the 49ers head coach. Look for Davis to climb up the rankings with a big season in 2011.

87. J. Gross Panthers, OT

Jordan Gross is an 8 year lineman who is one of the top left tackles in the NFL today. Gross is a 2 time Pro Bowler, who was the lone representative for the Panthers in 2010. The selection of QB Cam Newton in the 2011 draft should improve the effectiveness of the Panthers offense in the 2011 season. Look for Gross to maintain his standing on the NFL Top 100 ranking, and the offense of Carolina should improve for the upcoming season.

86. J. Freeman Buccaneers, QB

Josh Freeman completed his 2nd year as the QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers putting up very strong numbers. Freeman threw for 25 TD's with only 6 interceptions in the 2010 season. Freeman led the Buccaneers to 10 wins last year, and they barely missed the playoffs in the competitive NFC South Division. Freeman has a developing RB in Legerit Blount, WR Mike Williams another rising star, and a top TE Kellen Winslow. Look for Freeman to continue to rise into the top 40 players in the NFL Top 100 rankings in the coming year.

85. J. Babin Titans, DE

Jason Babin has his finest year in his 7 year career in the NFL. Babin had 12.5 sacks as a first year player for the Tennessee Titans. Babin went on to make the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. Babin has played with 5 teams during his 7 year career so it will be interesting to see if he'll be able to duplicate his numbers from the 2010 season. Offenses will put more focus on Babin in the 2011 season so look for his number to regress a little. Babin might find it difficult to attain the lofty sack numbers he recorded during the best year of his career.

84. J. Cribbs Browns, WR

The 6 year WR/Specialist didn't put up such lofty numbers in the 2010 season. Cribbs failed to bring back a punt or kickoff for a touchdown in the entire 2010 season. Cribbs will have to have a bounce back year if he's to stay in the NFL Top 100 rankings. With the new kickoff rules being implemented in the league Cribbs may not have many chances to get his hands on the football. If Cribbs doesn't show more development as a WR he won't be able to maintain his ranking.

83. M. Williams Buccaneers, WR

Mike Williams was just shy of 1,000 yards as a Rookie WR coming out of Syracuse. Williams scored 11 touchdowns during his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Williams is one of the best young WR's in the game and with a young, talented QB on his side Williams has the potential to enter the list as a top 5 wideout in the coming years. Williams 212 lbs frame allows him to catch footballs on the inside, and outside part of the field. If he stays healthy Williams should move up into the Top 50 ranked NFL players.

82. L. Woodley Steelers, LB

Lamar Woodley is a 4 year pro who is an integral part of the Pittsburg Steelers defense. Woodley compiled 10 sacks during the 2010 season that saw the Steelers make it all the way to the Super Bowl. Woodley fits perfectly in the 3-4 scheme run by the Steelers, as he is able to put constant pressure on the QB, and also guard tight ends, and running backs coming out of the back field. Woodley has plenty of upside, and with the strong core of linebackers that the Steelers posses it'll be very difficult to double him at any given time. Look for Woodley to have a break out 2011, though he enters the season as a free agent.

81. B. Raji Packers, DT

BJ Raji is already one of the best Defensive Tackles after only 2 years in the league. Raji was the one of the anchors on the Super Bowl winning Green Bay Packer defense. Raji contributed with 6.5 sacks during a season where he took on double teams throughout the entire year. Raji helped the Packers compile stats that ranked their defense in the top 5 in the league. With Raji only completing 2 seasons as a pro the sky is the limit for what he can accomplish in the league. Look for Raji to move up this year into a Top 40 ranked player. Raji could easily become the best DT in the league.

Evaluating the NFL's Top 100 as voted by the NFL Players (91 to 100)

By Umaru Lamin, DGT Sports Writer

The NFL players recently voted on the top 100 position players in the league. The rankings included all the positions that make up a team on offense, defense, and special teams. We'll take a closer look at the rankings, and analyze each player in the countdown until we reach the top player ranked in the league. Each day we'll evaluate ten players starting with the 100th player ranked. Below are the NFL players selections from 100 down to 91.

100. D McNabb Redskin, QB

Donovan McNabb completed his 12th season in 2010 with less than stellar statistics. McNabb had more interceptions 15, than touchdowns 14 for the first time during his career. McNabb was benched the last two games of the year by Redskin Coach Mike Shanahan. The late season demotion makes it a highly unlikely that McNabb will start the 2011 with the Redskins. McNabb's ranking may be in doubt if he is unable to catch on with a team that is willing to hand the starting position over to Donovan. With the shortened off-season, and the stipulations in McNabb's contract it may be difficult for McNabb to put up the stats to maintain a position in the Top 100.

99. C. Clifton Packers, OT

Chad Clifton is an 11th year veteran with the Packers who is also a two time Pro Bowler. Chad was voted as a starter for the 2010 season where he was a major contributor in the Packers Super Bowl run. Clifton plays one of the most prominent positions in football, the left tackle position. Chad protects the blind side of Aaron Rogers, and he also opens up holes for the Packers running game. With numerous injuries in their running game in the 2010 season the Packers where still capable of establishing a balanced attack. Clifton is a consistent left tackle who should continue to maintain his position as one of the top left tackles in the National Football League.

98. D. McFadden Raiders, RB

Darren McFadden is a 3rd year Running Back who is coming into the prime of his career. The high first round draft pick rushed for over 1,000 yards in the 2010 season. McFadden had plenty explosive runs throughout the season, and he was able to prove his critics wrong by staying healthy for much of the season. McFadden had 6 games with over 100 yards rushing, and he had many runs of 40 plus yards throughout the season. McFadden is definitely a Top 100 player whose stature will continue to rise. With only three seasons into his career look for McFadden to continue to move of the ranks as one of the top Running Backs in the NFL.

97. S. Phillips Chargers, DE

Shaun Phillips is a 7 year Defensive End who had a solid year in 2010. Shaun recorded 11 sacks for the talented Chargers defense that failed to make the playoffs. Phillips is a strong edge rusher whose job is to rush the opposing passer with his speedy, and quick first step. Shaun is a leader on the Chargers defense which ranked as the number one defense in 2010. Phillips is really a one-dimensional Defensive End who is usually responsible for sacking the QB. Shaun was rated the 97th player by players in the league, however with the many up, and coming rushers in the league Shaun will have to continue to put up stats to maintain his place in the Top 100.

96. N. Collins Packers, S

Nick Collins is a 6 year veteran who had a phenomenal season in 2010. Nick seemed to be all around the football on both passing, and running plays. Nick was selected to his 3rd straight Pro Bowl in 2010. Nick is one of the NFL's best Safeties who isn't afraid to put his head down and make big tackles as well. Collins is the last line of defense for the excellent Packers defense. Collins had 4 interceptions last year, and he seems to play his best in big games. Look for Nick Collins to continue his consecutive streak of Pro Bowls, as well as to move up the list of the NFL's Top 100 list.

95. J. Beason Panthers, LB

Jon Beason is a 4 year Linebacker who is the leader of the Carolina Defense. Beason showed his versatility last year by playing both the outside and middle line backer positions due to injuries to Panther linebackers. Beason stats declined a little due to the switch from inside to outside. Beason is a two time Pro Bowler who has the speed to maneuver all around the football field. Look for Beason to have a strong year in the 2011 season where he should continue his Pro Bowl run. Look for him to improve on his ranking from 95 on the NFL's Top 100 ranking.

94. F. Gore 49ers, RB

Frank Gore is a 6 year Running Back who has 2 Pro Bowl appearances during his career. Gore is coming off a serious hip injury that forced him to miss the last 5 games of the 2010 season. Gore was well on his way to rushing for over 1,000 yards before the injury. Gore's only nemesis is that he seems to continually get nicked up year after year. Gore is one of the best running backs in the league when it comes to running between the tackles. If Gore is able to fully recovery from his hip injury, and stay on the field the entire 2011 season he should definitely validate his ranking in the Top 100.

93. E. Berry Chiefs, S

Eric Berry makes the list of the NFL's Top 100 after just his rookie season. Berry made the Pro Bowl as a rookie Safety, and he already is one of the best Safeties in the NFL. Berry was a game changer, who fit into the aggressive scheme of the Kansas Chiefs. The Chiefs defense has a bright future with Berry leading the back end of the secondary along with the other young Cornerbacks. Berry is not just strong on passing downs, but is also an aggressive run stopper who recorded 92 tackles. Look for Berry to continue to rise on the Top 100 ranking, and if he stays healthy don't underestimate his chances of one day cracking the Top 10 list.

92. L Briggs Bears, LB

Lance Briggs is an 8 year player who already has 6 Pro Bowl selections during his career. Briggs is one of the leaders of the Bears defense, and his play making skills make him one of the best outside linebackers in the game. Briggs has the versatility to rush the QB from the edge, provide run support from the outside, and also guard running backs, and tight-ends coming out of the backfield. Briggs also has 3 All Prowl selections, and his instincts for the game always keeps him around the football. Look for Briggs to maintain his position in the Top 100 as he is still in the prime of his career.

91. T Owens Bengals, WR

Terrell Owens the 15 year Receiver had another productive season with the Cincinnati Bengals. Owens scored 9 touchdowns, and produced over 900 yards for the Bengals. Owens was the best Receiver on the Bengals roster in the 2010 season. Owens showed that he was able to still stretch the field with long touchdown receptions throughout the season. Owens continues to add to his recording breaking stats with receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. Owens is on the back side of his career so don't look for him to continue his journey up the list of the Top 100, but he should still have a product 2011 season with whatever team he signs with.

Top NFL Free-Agents to sign when the lockout ends

By Umaru Lamin, DGT Sports Writer

It's been an very unordinary off-season this year in the NFL. Usually after the Super Bowl winner is crowned champion GM's line up for the off season to sign the hottest free-agents to revamp their rosters, and give their teams the best chance at hoisting the Super Bowl trophy the following season. This year has been quite the opposite with the labor disharmony that has affected the NFL this off-season. Usually by this time of the year all the top notch free-agents have found a home with rookie draft picks the next item on the agenda. With no CBA agreement many eventual free-agents are left to wonder where they'll call home in the 2011 season.

The top free-agent on the market, Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning will almost certainly sign the richest contract to stay with the team that drafted him in '98. Manning will probably sign a contract that will surpass Brady's 4/yr $18 million extension signed during the 2010 season.

Nnamdi Asomugha will head the Defensive Back free-agents, after the Raider Cornerback voided his contract after last season. Nnamdi fits the profile of a shutdown corner who rarely sees the football thrown to his side of the field. Antonio Cromartie probably fits the next tier of DB's whose phone will be ringing once the free-agency period starts. The New York Jets signed Darrelle Revis to a 4/yr $46 million contract last year, so doubling up on two mega contracts in back to back seasons on the same position will make it difficult for the Jets to resign Cromartie. Ike Taylor of the Pittsburg Steelers is also a free-agent and he will probably battle Cromartie for the number two spot as the next most sought after Cornerback. A couple other notable Defensive Backs who will draw some attention when the free-agency period begins include CB Brent Grimes of the Atlanta Falcons, and Safety Dawan Landry of the Baltimore Ravens. Grimes is a 27 years old defensive back who totaled 5 interceptions last year with the Falcons. Grimes is developing into one of the better defensive backs in the NFL, and he already has one Pro Bowl apperance during his career. Dawan Landry will get a lot of attraction at the Safety position. Landry plays opposite of Ed Reed, and the 6'0, 220 lbs Safety recorded 111 tackles last year, so his size really attracts teams looking for a big intimidating hitter. Champ Bailey, the 12 year veteran for the Broncos, once considered the top DB in the league will draw some attention by teams looking for a strong Corner in a pass friendly football league.

Linebackers will also be top heavy with this years available crop of free-agents. The center pieces at the position will include LaMar Woodley of the Pittsburg Steelers, and Tamba Hali of the Kansas City Chiefs. Tamba Hali had more sacks, registering 14.5 sacks for the young, upstart Kansas City Chiefs defense, compared with LaMar Woodley's 10 sacks for the Pittsburg Steeler defensive. Kansas City Chiefs will almost undoubtedly exhaust all efforts to resign their young star LB who spends much of his time rushing the quarterback. Woodley on the other hand fits the Steelers 3-4 defenseive scheme perfectly with his dual ability to rush quaterbacks with his size, and strength to go along with his ability to cover running backs, and tight-ends coming out the backfield. Other notables at the Linebacker position are Chad Greenway of the Minnesota Vikings, and Stephen Tulloch of the Tennesse Titans. Greenway, and Tulloch are your more prototypical middle linebackers who usually lead a team in tackles.

The Wide Receiver position is met with a lot of free-agents that will be competing for openings during the signing period. Santonio Holmes, and Braylon Edwards of the Jets both will be eligible free-agents before the 2011 season kicks off. Sidney Rice will also lead the pack for Wide Receivers after coming back from hip surgey last season. Rice showed flashes of his 2009 Pro Bowl form during the second half of the 2010 season, which was one of the loan bright spots for a dissapointing season for the Minnesota Vikings. The best of the rest for the Wide Receivers will include Vincent Jackson, whose size and speeds will make him a sought after commodity by teams needing a threat who can stretch the field to put pressure on opposing defenses. Terrell Owens will also receive offers after catching 9 touchdown passes to lead the Cincinnati Bengals. Steve Smith of the New York Giants, Randy Moss, and Malcom Floyd are other wideouts who definitely will get some play at the position.

The Running Back position will not have an Adrian Peterson, or Chris Johnson hitting the market when free-agency starts, but there will be a few quality Running Backs who will be available for teams. The two most sought after will probably be DeAngelo Williams of the Carolina Pathers, and Cedric Benson of the Cincinnati Bengals. Williams has been the victim of injuries during his career so receiving a long-term deal might be somewhat of a risk for teams. Benson on the other hand has revamped his career after a couple of tough seasons earlier in his career. Ahmad Bradshaw of the New York Giants will test the market, and the speedy back will draw some attention in a league where two backs are needed to handle the pounding that backs face during the 16 game season. Michael Bush of the Raiders will almost certainly get calls after having a couple of productive games for the Oakland Raiders. The 245 lbs back has the similar build of Michael Turner, and after just turning 27 years old his future looks pretty bright after sustaining a serious leg injury his last year in college. Joseph Addai of the Colts, Pierre Thomas of the Saints, and Ronnie Brown of the Dolphins will also get a look from teams looking for serviceable backs on the market.

The free-agents at Defensive End are led by Cullen Jenkins of the Packers, Ray Edwards of the Vikings, and a young rusher Jason Babin of the Titans who had 12.5 sacks last year. Cullen Jenkins is coming off a injury plagued year where he spent most of the year on injury reserve. The Defensive End who might get the most activity in free-agency might be Mathias Kiwanuka of the New York Giants. The 6'5' 265 rushing end has the tools to blossom into a potential Pro Bowl pass rusher. Injuries has plagued the Defensive End during his career, and with the NFL being a pass first league, rushers like Kiwanuka remain premimum commodities by teams.

Although the season has been shorted this off-season that doesn't mystify the fact that when a deal is signed, free-agents will turn to the first item of priority for the league. The negotiating, bargaining, and signing of players will take place faster than anything the league has ever seen before. General Managers will have to be on their toes more than ever to pull the trigger on deals that may benefit their teams, and at the same time stay away from risk that may set their teams back. Hopefully the crap shoot, and race will start shortly so players, owners, and fans can begin to see their 53 man rosters filling out.
